Okay, post two.
Well I'm back. See, I kept my word. Hah.
Okay, had the MT 'O's this morning. I guess it wasn't so bad. I can't say for sure I'll get an A, but I hope at least a B is within my reach.
I watched X-Men 3: The Last Stand a few days back with the gang, and honestly I left the theatre feeling terribly disappointed.
Honestly, X-Men 2 was much better.
SPOILERS AHEAD, DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO HAVE THE MOVIE SPOILED FOR YOURSELF
Yeah, cheesy dialogue, and just a really weak storyline.
I mean, I'm not a Bryan Singer fanboy, but I felt Brett Ratner lacks the kind of intelligence and elegance that Singer brought to the previous films. Perhaps it's because Ratner isn't gay? Just kidding.
Seriously, I felt like Ratner was trying to combine way too many plotlines into one film. It just doesn't work. I'm not a director or a playwright so I don't have any right to criticise the fellow, but as part of the audience I'm sure many people would have felt at some point of time the story just wasn't flowing right. Cyclops is killed off from the beginning of the film, followed by Professor X. After he killed off the professor it just felt like he was making room for the other characters in the film to develop. Part of the story shows that Mystique gets her powers stripped off completely after she's hit by some hi-tech dart gun that utilises the mutant 'cure'.
Despite all the 'room' that is made, the newly introduced characters like Colossus and Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde were still underplayed. In the previous films Bryan Singer manages to introduce characters so easily they fell right into place instantly. He introduced Nightcrawler superbly in X-Men 2. Yet in X-Men 3, the introduction of the new characters such as Juggernaut and Callisto and Arclight seemed totally awkward. Perhaps it was due to the fact he was trying to fit in so many new personalities to feed the thousands of X-Men fanboys across the globe.
Did I mention that Nightcrawler doesn't appear in X-Men 3? Hah. Yeah he doesn't. Which is bad in many ways. I'm not a huge Nightcrawler fan, I think he's badass though. I think Alan Cumming played Nightcrawler extremely well in X-Men 2, so does Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto. Nightcrawler was one of the more interesting personalities in the films anyway, so it was a shame in my opinion that he doesn't appear in the third installment of the X-Men franchise.
The action sequences were great (not all though). I thought the final battle scene was really, for the lack of a better word, stupid. It features 6 of the X-Men (Colossus, Shadowcat, Iceman, Beast led by Wolverine and Storm) taking on like an entire army of Magneto's goons, as well as his Brotherhood of Mutants (Pyro, Juggernaut, Callisto, Arclight, Phoenix and some guy who is credited as Kid Omega but appears to have the abilities of Quill). The chase scene between Kitty and Juggernaut was TOTAL WTFAGENESS. I mean, it just made Juggernaut seem terribly stupid and retarded. In the comics it took like the entire team of the X-Men to bring down Juggernaut, and in the film all you need is Shadowcat (and a little help from Leech). Juggernaut just doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a total badass. Tsk.
Anyway, I felt the final fight scene was in some ways kinda similar to LOTR's siege of Helm's Deep. Not sure if anybody notices the similarities. Hah.
And of course, I just have to talk about Pyro and Iceman's fight scene. I thought Pyro's terrorist attack scene was pretty cool, really showed what they were about, but Pyro vs. Iceman was just ridiculous. The ending was really too predictable.
And Angel? Oh god, I really felt cheated when he got so little screentime after all the trailers featured him so much.
I felt the number one problem was still the revival of Jean Grey. I mean, it is true she's one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe (let's not count the cosmic entities), but when you have such an overpowered character in a film, it just spoils the mood of the whole story. It's pretty typical, it's either the really powerful dude wins, or the underdog wins through some deus ex machina. Perhaps in X-Men 4 (that is, should they continue the series), we'll get to see Iceman at his peak starting the next Ice Age? (Iceman is one of the strongest mutants out there too, but err just hasn't realised his true potential yet) Nah, let's hope not.
Now that X-Men 3 is crossed off my list of 'movies to catch', I'm looking forward to Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. JOHNNY DEPP IS GOD!
And let's hope Spider-Man 3 will surpasses all expectations next year. I heard Topher Grace might be playing Venom. LOL. That I oughta see.
